The design is a vibrant representation of the village's heritage, rendered in a classic heraldic style.

The Shield

The central element of the design is the shield, the focal point of the Akkrum wapen. It features a bold red field (known as "keel" in heraldry), symbolizing courage and sacrifice. Adorning this red field are three golden clover-leaves, arranged in a distinctive pattern: two above and one below. The gold color (heraldically referred to as "goud") signifies wisdom and wealth. These clover-leaves may symbolize Akkrum's agricultural and rural heritage, a common theme in village heraldry.

The Crown

Above the shield, the design incorporates a crown with five leaves, known as a "vlekke-kroon." This type of crown historically denoted Akkrum's status as a "vlek," a small town or townlet in old Dutch administrative terms, a status between a village and a larger town.

Historical Significance

The design faithfully reproduces a coat of arms that dates back to at least 1671, documenting a long history as a traditional symbol. This visual identity has remained consistent throughout the centuries, and continues to be a part of Akkrum's identity.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/akkrum-wapen-netherlands-coat-of-arms-shot-glass-15oz-15oz-position1.webp?v=1768327268
