The background features a quartered design of gold (or) and blue (azure). In the first and fourth quarters, a golden lion rampant, holding a red rose, is prominently displayed. These lions are a nod to England, and the rose symbolizes both the nation and the county of Hampshire, to which Bournemouth historically belonged.

In the second quarter, six martlets, stylized birds without feet, are arranged in a 2-2-2 pattern. These martlets are taken from the heraldry of Edward the Confessor, acknowledging the area’s historical connection to his estate. The third quarter depicts four salmon, swimming vertically (naiant), symbolizing the River Stour, a significant boundary river in the region. The colors of the quarters are counterchanged, adding to the visual complexity and balance of the design.

The Crest

Above the shield rests the crest, a further symbolic element. It features a green mount upon which stands a naturalistic pine tree, a direct reference to Bournemouth's famous pine-covered coastline and hills. In front of the pine tree, four golden roses are horizontally arranged, reinforcing the connection to England and Hampshire, just as the lion in the first and fourth quarters displays a rose.

The Supporters (In Some Versions)

While not always present, the design may include supporters. A golden lion on the right (dexter) holds a sword, while a dragon on the left (sinister) supports an oar. This adds further complexity and visual interest to the design.

Compartment

At the base of the design, a grassy mound and wavy water are included.
