This castle symbolizes the ancient fortifications of Dorchester, specifically referencing the site where the Dorchester prison now stands.

Royal Ties

An important detail is the small shield ("inescutcheon") placed on the castle. This inescutcheon displays the Royal Arms of England: the iconic quartered lions and fleur-de-lis, reflecting Dorchester's historical connection to the monarchy.

Unique Fleur-de-Lis

A notable feature within the Royal Arms on this design is the use of "semée" fleurs-de-lis, meaning they are scattered across the inescutcheon rather than arranged in the usual triangular pattern.
