The letter and numerals sit centred and dominate the surface, with nothing competing for attention. Empty space around the designation keeps the layout spare, and the lettering carries the straightforward, legible character of road signage. There are no illustrations or decorative borders, so the eye goes straight to the code.

Meaning & Symbolism

Australia numbers its roads by category. Letter prefixes mark the tier a route belongs to, and the number that follows places it within that network. B85 is one of the secondary routes in that system, a link that carries traffic between towns and regions beyond the major highways. The design honours that system of navigation: a short code that tells a driver exactly where they are heading, and a reminder of the long distances the country's roads cover.

Made for the Traveller's Eye

A designation this short suits a glass that is picked up and turned in the hand. Each time the drink is lifted, the code passes across the eye at close range, rather than being seen from across a room. The lettering reads as a waypoint, so the glass works well for anyone who keeps a love of road trips, maps or the long open country between towns close at hand.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/aus-alphanumeric-route-b85-australia-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-SLPH-16OZ-1FV8Q-front.webp?v=1793623688
