The letter and numeral sequence carries the whole composition, and its clean, even spacing gives it the plain authority of a directional marker. There are no illustrations, borders or decorative flourishes. Whitespace does the work that ornament would otherwise do, so the eye lands on the code and stays there.

Meaning & Symbolism

Route codes like C274 are the working vocabulary of the road network. They tell a driver which way to go, where a highway joins a byway, and how one stretch of country connects to the next. Australia's alphanumeric route system is built for mapping, travel and navigation across vast distances, so a code this simple stands for a whole network of roads, towns and long afternoons behind the wheel. The design takes that utilitarian language and treats it as something worth looking at.

Made to Be Held Close

A tall glass puts the code on a curved surface that wraps around the hand, so the designation turns slowly as you lift and tilt it, the way a road sign comes into view from the windscreen. It is a fitting choice for anyone who has ever counted route numbers on a long drive, or for a road-tripping friend who swears they can read a map better than the satnav. Pour something, raise a toast to the next road trip, and let the open highway come to the table.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/aus-alphanumeric-route-c274-australia-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-SLPH-16OZ-1FV3B-front.webp?v=1793621536
