The identifier B166 sits in white lettering at the centre, large and unfussy, so the number reads at a glance. Nothing competes with it: no illustration, no ornament, only the blue, the white and the clean sans-serif typography that Austrian road signage has used for decades.

Meaning & Symbolism

Every character carries information. The "B" marks a Bundesstraße, a main national road running below the level of motorways, while "166" singles out this one alpine route. The road runs roughly 41 kilometres from Golling an der Salzach in Salzburg, through Abtenau and Rußbach am Pass Gschütt, over the 957-metre Pass Gschütt, and down to Bad Goisern am Hallstätter See in Upper Austria. It is a vital cross-alpine link between the Salzach Valley and the Salzkammergut, and the blue-and-white sign has long guided travellers toward Hallstatt, Gosau and the Dachstein regions.

Reading the Sign Upright

A pint-style vessel is tall and curved, so the sign wraps around a surface that rises past eye level and is turned in the hand as it is lifted. The vertical rectangle of the sign suits that shape: the B166 stands upright on the side facing you, like a waymarker at a mountain junction. Lift the glass, and the route number is the first thing you see, which is a fitting way to start a journey toward the Pass.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/b166-at-austria-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-BT-16OZ-1FTDN-front.webp?v=1793648429
