The sign shape sits at the centre of the composition, and the design carries no decorative border or extra motifs. Its catalogue designation, B215-AT, is printed in the design's own record, so the reference stays with the artwork wherever it appears.

Meaning & Symbolism

A road sign exists to guide people, and the device gives this design its meaning: it points to a place. Austria, a landlocked country in Central Europe, is the subject, and the artwork frames it through the language of the road, where a country is reached by following a route. The design is a reproduction of this regional theme, and its meaning comes from that association with travel and direction.

Designed for the Hand

A mug is turned in the hand, so the design reads in pieces as the cup rotates, with the road-sign image moving across the curve of the surface. The heat-reactive finish means the artwork is only faintly visible when the mug is cold and comes forward once a hot drink is poured in, so the sign appears as the morning coffee arrives. It is a quiet, cheeky way to start the day with a little direction.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/b215-at-austria-road-sign-color-changing-mug-11oz-GMY-MUG-BT-11OZ-66-front.webp?v=1793655477
