The eagle sits at the top of the composition with a crown above it, and the oak branches curl around the lower half to form a circular wreath. Within the field appear a lantern, a pyramid-like mountain, a pair of crossed spears, a crescent moon and a sun disc. An ornate square border frames the whole arrangement.

Meaning & Symbolism

The double-headed eagle and the crown speak to princely authority, and the oak wreath is a traditional emblem of honour. The crossed spears and the mountain add a military and territorial note. The crescent moon and sun disc appear alongside the eagle as celestial figures. Together they present the administration of an eighteenth-century Wallachian prince in formal, emblematic terms.

In the Hand

A mug is turned as it is lifted, so the eagle and wreath come round in turn, and the crown stays above the rest of the banner. The dark ground keeps the gold and cream details clear against the curve of the ceramic, which suits a piece built around a single commanding emblem.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/banner-of-scarlat-ghica-as-prince-of-wallachia-1758-oman-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1772550418
https://gomugyourself.com/products/banner-of-scarlat-ghica-as-prince-of-wallachia-1758-oman-white-coffee-mug
