The swallowtail cut of the banner gives it a forked end, and the shield sits near the hoist, where the boar is the clearest figure. The black boar stands on white, and the gold crown with its fleurs-de-lis sits above the shield. The lines are flat and clean, so the outline of the boar and crown reads well at a distance.

Meaning & Symbolism

The arms follow the Triballia version of the arms of Serbia, which places the Triballian boar at the centre. In 1618 Serbia was a titular territory held by the Habsburg kings of Hungary, so the banner stood for a homeland the crown claimed rather than one it governed. It was assigned to the flag-bearer Ban Juraj V Zrinski for the coronation of Ferdinand II, and it is a record of the formal heraldry used at that ceremony in the early seventeenth century.

Shaped for the Mug

The swallowtail point wraps around the curve of the mug as the cup turns in the hand, and the shield stays close to the handle side, where it can be seen while drinking. The crown rises toward the rim, so the top of the design reads first when the mug is set down on a table.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/banner-of-serbia-at-ferdinand-iis-coronation-1618-serbia-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1772537669
https://gomugyourself.com/products/banner-of-serbia-at-ferdinand-iis-coronation-1618-serbia-white-coffee-mug
