The alphanumeric identifier BE-N857 is the whole composition, set as a clean, minimal line with no decorative framing and no imagery to compete with it. The eye reads it straight through, from the two letters to the hyphen and the numerals that follow.

Meaning & Symbolism

"BE" is the internationally used two-letter code for Belgium, and "N857" is the design's own reference number, the kind of entry a collection assigns to each piece. Together they say Belgium through identification alone: the nation is recognised by its code rather than by a flag, landmark or language. The design carries no historical or political narrative of its own. Its subject is the act of naming the country.

On the Color Morphing Mug

A mug is turned in the hand and read from every angle, and a code that works in a single line suits that kind of close, repeated viewing. The design is only faintly visible while the mug is cold. Once a hot drink is poured in, BE-N857 comes up into view, as if the identifier were being filed the moment the coffee arrives. It makes a cheeky conversation starter, and a warm little gift for a friend who collects codes, reference numbers or memories of Belgium.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/be-n857-belgium-road-sign-color-changing-mug-11oz-GMY-MUG-BN-11OZ-94-front.webp?v=1793664796
