A rectangular panel sits across the top of a vertical shield outline, and the shield narrows into a pointed-bottom curve at its base. The letters BR, 040 and DF are set in bold, plain type, stacked so the route number reads first. Nothing decorative interrupts the shape. The whole composition is built for quick recognition at a distance, the way a roadside sign has to be.

Meaning & Symbolism

The BR prefix marks a federal highway in Brazil's national road network, and 040 is the number assigned to this route. DF identifies the Distrito Federal, the federal district that houses the capital, Brasília. Put together, the three marks name a specific road serving a specific region. The shield itself is the shorthand drivers have used for decades to say "this way, this route," which gives the design its quiet, utilitarian character.

Made for the Mug in Hand

A road sign is meant to be read in a glance, and a mug is read the same way each morning, turned slowly in the hand until the shield faces you. The design belongs to the mug's black exterior, and as the cup warms, the artwork comes forward, so the route number seems to appear as the coffee arrives. It is a small, cheeky reveal for a sign that was built to be seen from far away.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/br-040-df-brazil-road-sign-color-changing-mug-11oz-GMY-MUG-BR040-11OZ-5-front.webp?v=1793854067
