The shield is rounded at the top and comes to a central downward point at the base, enclosed by a double outline. The “BR” prefix and the number “494” run in two stacked lines of black lettering. Nothing decorates the field, and every edge is crisp, so the marker is built for quick recognition rather than for display.

Meaning & Symbolism

“BR” designates a federal highway in Brazil, a category of road administered nationally to link states, regions and borders. The number 494 identifies this route within the network, and the junction it marks is a point where traffic joins or leaves the main road. The flat, modern treatment reflects the signage conventions in use across the country today.

Read on the Move

A road marker is glanced at while travelling, and a mug is glanced at in much the same way, between sips and while it is picked up again. The shield’s clear outline holds its shape across the curved ceramic, and the bold numerals survive the turn of the cup. For a design built to be read quickly, a mug is a fitting surface.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/br-494-jct-brazil-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-BR494-11OZ-1FS97-front.webp?v=1793835869
