The lettering is set with generous space around each character so that nothing competes for attention. Nothing decorative interrupts the message. The design relies on the spacing, weight and order of the characters to do the work.

Meaning & Symbolism

In Brazil, the BR prefix identifies a federal highway within the national road network, and the three-digit number that follows names the specific route. The jct tag signals that this point is a junction, a place where drivers must choose a direction. The design therefore carries the whole logic of Brazilian road navigation in a few characters: which national route you are on, and where it meets another.

Designed for the Hand

A pint glass is a tall, curved surface that is turned in the hand as it is drunk from, so the sign's text is read in passing, one line at a time, as the glass rotates. The sign works best as a navigational reference seen from the side, which suits a vessel that is held close and tilted rather than displayed at a distance. Pick it up and the junction marker comes round to meet you, a small piece of road map for the table.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/br-516-jct-brazil-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-BR516-16OZ-front.webp?v=1793780395
