The pentagon is drawn as a double outline, an outer edge and a thinner inner line, which gives the shield a crisp, engraved look. The numerals 391 sit centred inside it and are the only text in the piece. Everything is flat vector, so the shape reads as clearly on the curve of a mug as it would on a page.

Meaning & Symbolism

Pentagonal shields are a familiar sight on Brazilian state highways, where a number on the marker identifies the road and its junctions for drivers. Route 391 is the designation this piece names, a point where one road meets another. The artwork honours that everyday form of wayfinding and gives a single road number the presence of a badge.

On the Mug

A mug is turned in the hand, so the shield rotates into view as you move the cup, and the double border catches the light along its edge. The C-handle sits on the opposite side, leaving the numerals clear to read while you drink. It suits a desk or a kitchen shelf for anyone who notices road signs on a long drive.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/brasil-estado-391-jct-brazil-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-BRSSTD-11OZ-1FQDY-front.webp?v=1793830063
