The design encapsulates the college's rich heritage and commitment to education.

Visual Elements and Symbolism

The central focus of the design is the shield, the principal element of the Selwyn College Otago coat of arms. The shield’s imagery likely features symbolic elements that represent the college’s core values and identity. Key to the design is a prominent torch or flame motif. This signifies learning, enlightenment, and the passing on of knowledge.

The inclusion of the torch directly relates to the college’s motto, "Vitai Lampada Tradunt," which translates to "They hand on the torch of life." The torch is thus a powerful visual representation of the educational mission, and the continuous transfer of knowledge and wisdom from one generation to the next. The overall design reflects the Anglican foundation of Selwyn College, paying tribute to its namesake, Bishop George Augustus Selwyn.

Institutional Identity

The coat of arms, as depicted on the shot glass, visually connects Selwyn College to the University of Otago's broader heraldic tradition. This links Selwyn College with the university’s institutional identity, creating a sense of shared heritage and belonging.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/coa-selwyn-college-otago-new-zealand-coat-of-arms-shot-glass-15oz-15oz-position1.webp?v=1768432180
https://gomugyourself.com/products/coa-selwyn-college-otago-new-zealand-coat-of-arms-shot-glass-1-5oz
