Its fields divide diagonally in red, grey, blue and green, with a smaller vertical inset shield carrying the Romanian tricolour and the PCR emblem. Above the shield, a golden flag bears a black eagle within a laurel wreath and the date 1821. A silver pickaxe crosses below the flag, and a black cogwheel and a grey industrial tower complete the lower register. The lettering REPUBLICA SOCIALISTA ROMÂNIA runs around the crest in clean, block capitals.

Meaning & Symbolism

Heraldry of this kind was a way for a region to state its identity within the national state, and this crest does so with a precise set of emblems. The eagle and laurel signal authority and honour, the date anchors the design in a specific moment of regional history, and the pickaxe and gear point to the industrial work that shaped the county in the socialist period. The inset tricolour and PCR emblem tie the local arms to the wider Romanian state, which is the whole logic of a county crest from that era.

On the Mixing Glass

A mixing glass is tall, curved and held in the hand while it is stirred or poured, so the crest wraps around a surface that is turned constantly in use. The shield sits centrally on the side of the glass, where it is seen at every angle as the glass is lifted. For anyone who collects European heraldry or studies the symbols of the socialist era, this is a crest that can be read at the table.

https://gomugyourself.com/products/coat-of-arms-of-gorj-county-in-the-socialist-rep-of-romania-oman-pint-glass-16oz
