The design is rich with heraldic symbolism, offering a glimpse into Coddington's personal values and legacy.

The Shield (Escutcheon)

The primary focus is the shield, or escutcheon. The background is rendered in Argent (silver/white), providing a clean canvas for the central elements. A prominent fess embattled counter-embattled Sable (a black horizontal band with a battlemented top and bottom) divides the shield. Above and below this band, three lions passant Gules (red walking lions) are proudly displayed. The fess suggests themes of defense and fortification, while the lions represent courage, strength, and leadership.

The Crest

Above the shield, the crest features a dragon's head Gules (red) positioned between two wings “chequy Or and Azure” (a pattern of gold and blue squares). This striking crest, emerging from a gold ducal coronet, emphasizes vigilance, guardianship, and noble bearing.

The Motto

While not visually present on the glass itself, the motto "Immeroabilis est vera virtus" ("True valour cannot be sunk") is the guiding principle of the arms. It is a constant reminder of enduring virtue and unwavering courage.

Overall Impression

The entire design is a carefully considered composition, a visual narrative. The contrast of colors, the strength of the lions, the unique fess, and the commanding dragon crest combine to create a compelling emblem, encapsulating both William Coddington's personal history and the enduring values he represented. The shot glass becomes a miniature heraldic portrait, a tangible connection to the past.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/coat-of-arms-of-william-coddington-united-states-coat-of-arms-shot-glass-15oz-15oz-position1.webp?v=1765580564
https://gomugyourself.com/products/coat-of-arms-of-william-coddington-united-states-coat-of-arms-shot-glass-1-5oz
