The design is a striking visual representation of the region's historical and symbolic heritage.

Design Elements

The central element of the design is the shield, which is divided horizontally. A broad, eye-catching chequered bar dominates the middle of the shield. This bar features three rows of alternating red (gules) and white (argent/silver) squares, forming a distinctive visual pattern known as the “Märkischer Schachbalken.”

Above the chequered bar, in the upper section (the "chief"), a prominent black lion rises (rampant) on a gold (yellow) background. The lion's claws are rendered in red, adding a contrasting touch. In the lower section (the "base"), against a white (silver) background, a simple yet powerful black cross stretches across the base.

Symbolism and Meaning

The design elements are steeped in symbolism. The "Märkischer Schachbalken," the chequered bar, is a direct reference to the region's historical connection to the Counts of the Mark, a significant medieval territorial lordship. The lion and the cross, positioned above and below the chequered bar, likely represent other historical, ecclesiastical, or territorial affiliations, though their precise meanings are not officially detailed.

The coat of arms, as a whole, serves as a unifying emblem, linking the district's municipalities to their shared past and administrative identity.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/deu-mrkischer-kreis-coa-germany-coat-of-arms-shot-glass-15oz-15oz-position1.webp?v=1765594757
