Two silver (argent) keys dominate the center. These keys are positioned vertically (palewise), with their wards pointing upwards and their bows overlapping. Specifically, the dexter (right) key bows over the sinister (left) key, a detail contributing to the unique character of the design.

Symbolism and Meaning

The keys are a direct reference to Saint Peter, the patron saint of the Archbishopric of Trier, who historically governed Wittlich. The use of the keys stems from the early 14th century, when a civic seal of lay judges first depicted this element. The red and silver colors (red field and silver keys) are the traditional tinctures associated with Trier's arms, adopted by Wittlich to represent its historical connection to the Archbishopric.

Historical Context

The keys have been a part of the city's representation since the early 14th century, serving as the basis for the present coat of arms. Though variations existed in the past, with different color schemes and key arrangements, this current design has become the standard representation for the city.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/deu-wittlich-coa-germany-coat-of-arms-shot-glass-15oz-15oz-position1.webp?v=1765596416
