Richly textured robes and heavy ecclesiastical garments frame the subject's gaunt face and direct gaze, while subtle shading creates depth against a neutral, shadowed background that emphasizes the ornate details of his office.

Era & Authority

As Prince-Bishop of Bamberg, Johan Philips von Gebsattel ruled during a period of intense religious and political realignment in the Holy Roman Empire, and this portrait serves as an uncompromising record of that specific aristocratic power. Custos captures not just a physical likeness, but the formidable gravity of a prince of the Church, preserving the historical weight of European leadership from the turn of the seventeenth century.

On the Mixing Glass

Curving around the tall exterior of a 16oz glass, the austere historical portrait meets a functional vessel held directly in the hand, turning a quiet moment of refreshment into an encounter with early seventeenth-century portraiture.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/dominicus-custos-portret-van-johan-philips-van-gebsattel-vorstbisschop-van-bamberg-1602-mixing-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-DMNCST-16OZ-14DLU-front.webp?v=1788648083
https://gomugyourself.com/products/dominicus-custos-portret-van-johan-philips-van-gebsattel-vorstbisschop-van-bamberg-1602-mixing-glass-16oz
