Bisecting the red background is a vertical stripe of silver (zilver), known as a pale. This simple yet striking red-white-red color scheme, deeply rooted in Dordrecht's history, reflects the colors of the town.

Embellishments and Symbols

Crowning the shield is a golden crown, adorned with fleurons and pearls, representing the dignity and status of the municipality. On either side of the shield stand golden griffins (griffioen). These mythical creatures, with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, are heraldic symbols of courage, strength, and vigilance. They serve as supporters, adding grandeur and further signifying the city's standing.

Historical Context

The colors of the shield are linked to the town's historical use of red and white cloth for officials’ garments, dating back to around 1284. The coat of arms, officially granted in 1816, has evolved over time, with the crown and griffins added later to embellish the shield. Today, this iconic design is a proud emblem of Dordrecht, displayed on buildings and throughout the city, representing its rich heritage.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/dordrecht-wapen-netherlands-coat-of-arms-shot-glass-15oz-15oz-position1.webp?v=1765597620
