The red Latin cross, with its white inner cross, is the main graphic mark. A royal crown set with pearls and gold fleur-de-lis sits above the shield of the Portuguese arms, which carries five blue escutcheons and gold castles. Navy and gold appear in small accents, and the flat vector treatment keeps every shape sharp.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Cross of the Order of Christ was the emblem of a major military and religious order that supported Portugal's maritime voyages, so it carries the weight of the age of exploration. The crown and shield stand for royal authority, and the five blue shields are the national arms. The flag is tied to the period from 1500 to 1670, when Portuguese ships were trading and operating across the Indian Ocean.

Turning the Cross on a Mug

A mug is turned in the hand, so the red cross comes round to the front as the cup is lifted and tilted. The crown sits at the top edge where it catches the eye first, and the white field makes the red stand out from any angle. It is a design built for close looking, which suits a cup that is seen up close each morning.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/flag-of-portuguese-galleons-in-india-1500-1670-portugal-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1756532886
https://gomugyourself.com/products/flag-of-portuguese-galleons-in-india-1500-1670-portugal-white-coffee-mug
