Inside it, five blue shields sit in a cross pattern, each marked with seven small silver discs. A green fleur-de-lis cross runs through the centre, and twelve gold castles line the red edge. The flat vector shapes are bold and clean, with white, yellow and blue standing out against the red.

Meaning & Symbolism

The five shields, known as the quinas, recall the Five Wounds of Christ, a motif tied to the legendary Battle of Ourique in 1139. The green cross belongs to the Military Order of Avis, and João I drew authority from his position as its Grand Master after his victory at Aljubarrota in 1385. The castles echo Castilian heraldry. This version of the flag stayed in use for a century, until John II's reforms of 1485 simplified the shields.

On the Coffee Mug

A mug is turned in the hand, so the banner wraps around the curve of the cup and comes into view with every lift. The broad white field lets the red border and blue shields show clearly from the handle side and the front alike. It is a heraldic piece that suits a slow morning at the table.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/flag-of-the-kingdom-of-portugal-1385-1485-portugal-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1756532602
https://gomugyourself.com/products/flag-of-the-kingdom-of-portugal-1385-1485-portugal-white-coffee-mug
