In the upper corner a blue canton holds white five-pointed stars in neat horizontal rows. Red takes the largest share of colour, with white and blue close behind. The rectangles are plain and well spaced, so the flag's structure is easy to read at a glance.

Meaning & Symbolism

The thirteen stripes honour the original colonies, and the stars represent the states in the Union. The mid-1840s were a period of rapid expansion, and the annexation of Texas in 1845 is the most significant event tied to this version. Each new star marked a new state, so the flag was updated as the map grew. The traditional readings of the colours, with red for valour, white for purity and blue for justice, are the ones usually given for this banner.

Where It Meets the Drinker

A mug is turned in the hand, so the stripes wrap around the cup while the canton comes into view as it is lifted. The white ceramic keeps the red and blue vivid, and the C-handle places the image where the eye naturally falls.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/flag-of-the-united-states-1845-1846-3-2-aspect-ratio-united-states-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1756806203
https://gomugyourself.com/products/flag-of-the-united-states-1845-1846-3-2-aspect-ratio-united-states-white-coffee-mug
