In the upper left corner sits the blue canton, which holds the star field in a staggered arrangement of alternating rows. The palette is simple and flat: white takes up the largest share, with a deep red and a navy blue doing the rest. The rectangular layout reads clearly from a distance and works well as a wrap-around image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The thirteen stripes recall the original colonies that founded the nation, while the stars stand for the states united within the federation. This version belongs to a short but eventful stretch of expansion, when new states joined faster than the flag could be redrawn to match. Because flags of this period were often hand-sewn, star placement and stripe widths varied from one maker to the next, which is part of what gives this design its character.

Holding the Story in Your Hand

A mug is turned in the hand as it is drunk from, so the stripes wrap around the cylinder and the canton comes into view as the cup is lifted. The C-handle keeps the image on the side you see first, and the white ceramic gives the red and blue a clean, bright backdrop for the morning cup.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/flag-of-the-united-states-1847-1848-3-2-aspect-ratio-united-states-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1756806159
https://gomugyourself.com/products/flag-of-the-united-states-1847-1848-3-2-aspect-ratio-united-states-white-coffee-mug
