The blue canton in the upper hoist corner carries 37 white five-pointed stars. The layout is measured and symmetrical, and the sharp vector edges keep both the stripes and the star field clean.

Meaning & Symbolism

The stripes stand for the original thirteen colonies, and the stars stand for the states of the Union. This flag was in use through the decade after Reconstruction began, when the country was rebuilding and extending its reach westward. It was replaced in 1877, when Colorado's admission added a star, which makes this design a snapshot of the nation just before that change.

On the Ceramic Mug

A mug is turned in the hand, so the canton slides into view as you lift the cup and the stripes wrap around its curve. The red and white read clearly from a distance, and the rows of stars come into focus as the mug moves closer to the face.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/flag-of-the-united-states-1867-1877-3-2-aspect-ratio-united-states-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1756805984
https://gomugyourself.com/products/flag-of-the-united-states-1867-1877-3-2-aspect-ratio-united-states-white-coffee-mug
