The image carries no title or inscription, which leaves the painting's subject and mood open to the viewer. When the mug is cold, the design sits quietly and faintly, and as a hot drink is poured in, the image comes forward. The reveal happens in stages, so the picture is seen gradually rather than all at once.

Meaning & Symbolism

The meaning of this piece rests on its attribution. Bridgman was an established figure in late nineteenth and early twentieth century American painting, and he was known for travelling and painting scenes of North Africa and the Near East. A work with no known title asks the viewer to consider how an artist's name, era and reputation can carry a picture even when its original story has been lost. The design honours that lost-title quality as much as the painting itself.

Made for the Morning Cup

A mug is held close and turned slowly, so the artwork is met at arm's length and then at the lip. The image is revealed in the moment the coffee or tea goes in, which makes the pour part of the viewing. It is a good companion for a slow start to the day, when the cup is warm in both hands and the painting appears as the drink heats the surface. The design suits anyone who enjoys a bit of art history with their breakfast.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/frederick-arthur-bridgman-1847-1928-unkown-title-color-changing-mug-11oz-11oz-position1.webp?v=1756719789
https://gomugyourself.com/products/frederick-arthur-bridgman-1847-1928-unkown-title-color-changing-mug-11oz
