Nothing competes with it: the arrow sits at the centre of the field and is drawn with the plain, direct geometry of real signage. The palette is restricted to white and black, the colours of standard road markings, so the piece reads as a faithful transcription rather than a decorative flourish. The identification code RUS 017 anchors the design, a small piece of lettering that tells you exactly which sign you are looking at.

Meaning & Symbolism

A directional sign is an instruction in its purest form: go this way. The left-pointing arrow stands for choice, for the moment at a junction when a traveller commits to a direction. The RUS 017 code places the sign within Ireland's own system of road signage, so the design speaks to regional geography and the everyday history of getting from one town to the next. Its utilitarian, vintage character is what gives it its warmth; it is the kind of sign that has been seen by generations of drivers and walkers and remembered for exactly that reason.

Made for the Mixing Glass

A mixing glass is a tall, narrow vessel held close and turned slowly in the hand, so the sign is seen from above and from the side as the glass moves. The left-pointing arrow keeps its direction as the glass is lifted and tilted, which makes it a small, cheeky navigation aid for whoever is stirring the next round. Give it to a friend who is always pointing the way, and let the arrow do the rest.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/ie-road-sign-rus-017-old-left-ireland-mixing-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-IERD-16OZ-1DTP8-front.webp?v=1793576395
