The alphanumeric code N13 is the dominant element, with the IRL and Ireland references set alongside it. Nothing competes with the lettering, so the eye reads the route number first and the rest second. The subject is pure text and numerals, arranged the way a road sign arranges them: clear, direct and easy to read at a glance.

Meaning & Symbolism

A route number is navigational shorthand. It tells a driver which road they are on without a place name at all. The IRL prefix ties the code to Ireland, so the sign speaks to the country's network of numbered roads. Geography, travel and transport are the themes the design carries, and the route marker is the image that carries them.

Made for the Hand

A mug is turned in the hand, so the sign is seen in passing, the way a driver catches a marker from the window. The full wraparound decoration means the lettering keeps its presence as the mug rotates. The design also has a second moment: it stays faint on a cold mug and comes up when a hot drink is poured in, so the route number appears as the coffee arrives, like a sign you only pick out once you are already on the road.
