irl-n28-ireland-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz
IRL N28 (Ireland) (Road Sign) Pint Glass 16oz

IRL N28 (Ireland) (Road Sign) Pint Glass 16oz

This design takes the format of a road marker and sets it down plainly: a route code, a country, and nothing else to distract from them.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is built on typography. The letters IRL and the route number N28 sit at the centre of the artwork, with the name Ireland given equal weight beneath them. There are no illustrations, borders or decorative flourishes. The layout is clean and open, so the lettering carries the whole design and every character reads clearly from a distance, as signage is meant to.

Meaning & Symbolism

IRL is the international country code for Ireland, and it is the first thing the eye lands on. The N prefix marks a national road in the Irish road network, so N28 places the design within the country's numbered route system rather than in a generic motif. Together the code and route number turn a piece of infrastructure into a statement of place. The sign format itself is the point: a road marker tells you where you are and where you are headed, and this design does the same for Ireland.

Designed for the Pint Glass in Hand

A pint glass is held at the waist and turned as it is raised, so the artwork is read in pieces, one face at a time, rather than all at once. Because this design is typographic and spare, it stays legible from every angle the glass passes through. It also suits the object's role as a shaker and a serving glass: the lettering reads the same whether the glass is being poured from or carried across a room. A design that asks for little attention suits a glass that is used at close range, again and again.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/irl-n28-ireland-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-RLN-16OZ-1DTR2-front.webp?v=1793588466
