The N and the numeral 40 sit at the centre of the design as the main subject, with the sign format doing the work of the composition. Nothing is decorative for its own sake: the eye goes straight to the route number, the way it would when reading a sign from a moving car.

Meaning & Symbolism

In Ireland, the N prefix marks a national primary road, and the N40 is the Cork South Ring Road. This orbital route runs about 15.45 km around the southern side of Cork city, starting at the N22 in Ballincollig, passing through the Jack Lynch Tunnel beneath the River Lee, and ending at the Dunkettle Interchange, where it meets the N25 and N8/M8. The design honours a working piece of modern Irish geography, one that commuters and drivers navigate every day.

Lifting the Route Off the Road

A mug is turned in the hand and read from every angle, so a sign-style design suits it well: the designation can wrap the full curve of the cup and still be read at a glance over the first coffee of the morning. The colour-changing finish adds a small surprise, as the design only comes fully into view once a hot drink is poured in. For anyone who has sat in Cork traffic on the southern routes, the N40 is a familiar sight, and now it lives on the cup they reach for every day.
