The road sign is the organising shape, and Austria is the only subject the artwork asks you to read. Nothing competes with it: there are no borders of decoration, no secondary scenes, and no added text beyond the identifying name. That restraint is what gives the piece its clarity, because the eye lands on the sign and understands it at once.

Meaning & Symbolism

A road sign is a piece of wayfinding. It exists to tell a traveller where they are, which way to go and what lies ahead, so the form carries the idea of journeys and arrivals. Set against the name Austria, the sign turns a country into a place you travel toward. The L139 series is an official catalogue sequence for this design, which places the piece within a numbered set of regional artworks rather than a one-off image.

On the Mixing Glass

A road sign is read from a distance, but this artwork is read close. The glass is lifted, turned and held, so the design comes into view at hand height and moves with every pour. The tapered base sits comfortably in the palm, which suits a piece built around something you pick up and carry. It makes a good companion for anyone whose plans involve the road, whether that means a long drive through the Alps or a trip that starts at a kitchen counter.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/l139-at-austria-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-LT-16OZ-1FTU1-front.webp?v=1793650429
