The designation sits at the centre of the field, and the composition gives it room to dominate without any decorative border, background pattern or secondary motif. The lettering and numerals are the design, so the eye moves straight from the code to the country name and back again. It reads like a sign: direct, legible and built to be understood at a glance.

Meaning & Symbolism

The "MG" prefix is the abbreviation for Minas Gerais, one of Brazil's largest states, and MG-230 is the number of a state highway that runs through it. Road signs are the most ordinary way a place announces itself to travellers, which is why this piece works as a tribute to the journey rather than to a monument. The series framing ties it to a wider run of Brazilian road designations, each one a small marker of where you are and where the road is taking you.

Designed for the Mixing Glass

A mixing glass is a tall, narrowing vessel that is lifted and turned in the hand, so the design has to work as it travels around the curve. A composition built on one centred designation holds together on a rounded surface, and the sign reads as a single unbroken statement from every angle. It makes a cheeky gift for anyone who has ever navigated by a road number, and a conversation starter for anyone who has.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/mg-230-brazil-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-MG230-16OZ-front.webp?v=1793764497
