The letters MG sit above or alongside the numerals 485, and nothing competes with them. The layout is plain and direct, with the marking centred so it reads at a glance. Its graphic clarity is the point, since a route sign has to be understood quickly by someone passing at speed.

Meaning & Symbolism

Brazilian state highways carry a two-letter prefix that identifies the state they cross. The MG here stands for Minas Gerais, one of the largest states in the country, and the number 485 places this particular road within that network. The sign therefore works as a small piece of regional geography: a way of saying where a road belongs and how it is named. Its appeal lies in that quiet specificity rather than in any decorative flourish.

On the Mixing Glass

A mixing glass is held in the hand and turned as it is used, so the design is seen in pieces as it passes the eye. The narrow lower section keeps the marking within easy view while the glass is lifted and tilted. Set on a table, the designation faces the room, and it is most often read by the person pouring. It is a marker for anyone who has ever followed a road sign into somewhere new, and a fitting companion for a conversation about the journey.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/mg-485-brazil-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-MG485-16OZ-front.webp?v=1793758549
