In the upper canton sits the South African national flag of the period, shown in its multicoloured form, and the strong contrast between the green cross, the white field and that small colourful square gives the design its clear, formal structure. There is no lettering, only the cross and the canton.

Meaning & Symbolism

The ensign was designed to tell South African ships apart from the British White Ensign, which had been the reference for naval flags. The green cross was the means of doing that, and it is commonly linked to the green of the Vierkleur, the flag of the former South African Republic, and to older Dutch and Flemish crosses. The canton keeps the national identity in view. The white fimbriation that was added in 1959 to separate the canton from the cross is absent here, which places this version firmly in its short period of use.

On the Ceramic Mug

A mug is turned in the hand, so the cross moves across the curve of the cup and its arms appear and disappear as you rotate it. The canton comes into view only on one side, which suits a flag built around a single central motif.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/naval-ensign-of-south-africa-1952-1959-south-africa-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1772537189
https://gomugyourself.com/products/naval-ensign-of-south-africa-1952-1959-south-africa-white-coffee-mug
