Against it sits a single yellow flower of five petals, placed as the focal point with little else around it. White appears only in small amounts. The flat vector drawing is clean and formal, with even colour and no shading, and the restraint of the layout suits an emblem that is meant to be read quickly at sea.

Meaning & Symbolism

The flag is flown on naval vessels to show that the Vice Minister of Defense is on board, whether for maritime operations or an official visit. It is adapted from the land standard of the same office and modified for use at sea. It was established on 14 March 1972 under the Defense Agency's instruction on the flags of the Self-Defense Forces, and later revisions have kept it in line with official protocol. The design expresses the rank and authority of the office within Japan's national defence administration.

Carried on the Mug

A mug is turned in the hand, and the burgundy field and yellow flower pass across the eye as the cup moves, the single bloom returning at each turn. The deep colour holds its richness against the white glaze, and the five-petalled shape is simple enough to pick out from across a table. It is a fitting piece for a desk where naval history and formal ceremony are close at hand.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/naval-standard-of-the-vice-minister-of-defense-of-japan-japan-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1772554270
https://gomugyourself.com/products/naval-standard-of-the-vice-minister-of-defense-of-japan-japan-white-coffee-mug
