The code RJ-151 is the focal point, and the sign is organised around it with no ornament competing for attention. The layout is plain and direct, in the manner of a roadside marker that has to be read at a glance. The name sets the terms of the image: a designation, a single identifier, and a clear hierarchy from place to number.

Meaning & Symbolism

The "RJ" prefix identifies the state of Rio de Janeiro, and "151" is the number assigned to this route within Brazil's highway network. Together they turn a stretch of road into a map reference, so the sign stands for navigation, distance and place rather than decoration. Brazilian road signage of this kind is a familiar part of how travellers and drivers read the country's landscape, and the design carries that everyday function into a graphic image.

Designed for the Pint Glass

A pint glass is a tall, curved surface that turns in the hand as you lift it, so a sign printed on it is read in pieces and then all at once as the glass moves. The route code sits on a vessel that is handled, emptied and refilled, which gives a road marker an unexpectedly social setting. It makes a good talking point for anyone who has driven that route, or who has a connection to Rio de Janeiro state, and it suits a gift for a friend who likes things with a sense of place.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/rj-151-brazil-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-RJ151-16OZ-front.webp?v=1793750870
