The designation RJ-164 holds the centre of the composition, with Brazil given its place beside it, and nothing else competes for attention. There is no illustration and no decorative ornamentation. The layout is as direct as the signage it recalls, so the letters and numerals do all the work.

Meaning & Symbolism

RJ is the Brazilian abbreviation for the state of Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian state highways carry codes of this form, with the letters identifying the state and the number identifying the route. The design therefore reads as a route marker: one road, in one place, named precisely. Its meaning lies in that specificity, the kind of identifier a traveller looks for at a junction.

Read It as You Turn

A mixing glass is lifted, tipped and turned in the hand, and its tall curved wall keeps the composition in view from more than one angle. The text wraps around that curve, so RJ-164 and Brazil appear one after another as the glass moves, the way a route sign comes into view on a bend. It is an inside joke for anyone who has driven that road, and a clear, cheeky nod for everyone else.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/rj-164-brazil-road-sign-pint-glass-16oz-GMY-MIXI-RJ164-16OZ-front.webp?v=1793751081
