Its designation, RJ 184, is set inside the shield like a single line of directions.

Visual Elements & Composition

The artwork is a flat vector image built from three colours. White dominates, filling most of the field, while solid black forms the outline and the lettering. A thin grey tone appears only as a faint accent, so the image reads as crisp and graphic from a distance. The shield is a pentagon with a double outline, centred and symmetrical, with nothing around it to compete for attention. The letters RJ sit above the numerals 184, both bold and evenly spaced, and they are the only text in the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

Route shields are one of the most practical forms of public design. Their job is to identify a road quickly, at speed, without any decoration. This piece takes that utilitarian language and applies it to Brazil. The letters RJ are the standard abbreviation for Rio de Janeiro state, so the shield places the viewer on a specific state highway rather than a generic landmark. The Brazilian theme is carried by that regional code, and the minimal, modern treatment makes the sign itself the subject. It is a quiet tribute to the everyday roads that connect a place.

On the Color Morphing Mug

A mug is turned in the hand, so the shield wraps around the cup and reveals itself one side at a time as you lift it. The pentagon's sharp angles and high-contrast black and white come into their own when the image is seen in motion, and the reveal as the mug warms suits a design built around a sign meant to be read at a glance. Every morning the shield is in the same place in your hands, turned toward you, with RJ 184 ready to read.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/rj-184-brazil-road-sign-color-changing-mug-11oz-GMY-MUG-RJ184-11OZ-1FRDK-front.webp?v=1793844173
