A bold orange cross divides the field into four quarters, which is a reversal of the colours used on the Dutch royal standard. The upper-left and lower-right quarters carry the Dutch lion, shown with a sword and arrows. The upper-right and lower-left quarters carry a red rose. Blue, orange and white dominate, with red as a small accent, and the flat vector style keeps the lines firm and the divisions easy to follow.

Meaning & Symbolism

The lion is the national emblem of the Netherlands, and the sword and arrows stand for the defence of the country. The red rose is the device of the House of Lippe, the personal arms of Prince Bernhard, who held the title of Prince Consort in this period. The standard was adopted in 1948 and remained in use until the abdication of Queen Juliana in 1980, which gives the design its precise historical span.

A Quartered Emblem in the Hand

A quartered standard is at its best when its divisions can be read clearly. On a mug, the blue field fills the view, and turning the cup brings each quarter into sight in turn, with the cross marking the join between the lion and the rose.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/royal-standard-of-the-prince-consort-of-the-netherlands-1948-1980-netherlands-white-coffee-mug-11oz-position1.webp?v=1772551569
https://gomugyourself.com/products/royal-standard-of-the-prince-consort-of-the-netherlands-1948-1980-netherlands-white-coffee-mug
