sadc-road-sign-gfs-a12-9-angola-road-sign-white-coffee-mug
SADC road sign GFS A12-9 (Angola) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

SADC road sign GFS A12-9 (Angola) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug

This design reproduces an Angolan road sign, GFS A12-9, which marks the way to a butterfly farm, or Fazenda de borboletas, in the language of the sign itself.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sign runs on high-contrast colour, built from black, white and yellow. A single butterfly icon sits at the centre of the layout and dominates the frame, drawn in simple, bold forms so it reads at a glance. Nothing is decorative. Every mark is there to be recognised quickly, which is exactly how a driver needs to take in a roadside sign at speed.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sign follows the SADC Road Traffic Signs Manual (SADC-RTSM), the regional standard that governs road signage across Southern African member states, and it is coded GFS A12-9. Its purpose is to point travellers toward a nature-based landmark. The butterfly stands for that landmark and for the conservation of insect life, while the sign's shape and colour place it firmly within the language of regional transport. Two ideas meet on one panel: the road that carries you, and the small, fragile creatures you might be heading to see.

Turned in the Hand

A mug is handled and turned, so this sign gets read in fragments, one side and then the other, the way a roadside sign is glimpsed from a passing car. Keep the cup close and the butterfly comes into focus first, then the rest of the layout. It is a fitting pick for anyone who loves a good cup of something warm and a little bit of wayfinding.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/sadc-road-sign-gfs-a12-9-angola-road-sign-white-coffee-mug-GMY-MUG-SDCRD-11OZ-1FVRI-front.webp?v=1793600619
