Sea green makes up the rest, drawn as a rounded-rectangle border that frames the sign and as the bold numerals 696 sitting at its centre. There is no illustration, no scenery and no decoration beyond that. The layout is centred and symmetrical, so the number is the first and only thing the eye settles on, which is exactly how a route marker is meant to work.

Meaning & Symbolism

A route marker is a promise of orientation. Rural municipal routes in Saskatchewan are identified by numbered markers that follow the provincial Ministry of Highways standards, and each number ties a stretch of gravel or paved road to a particular community and its surrounding countryside. Route 696 stands for that network of quiet grid roads, wheat fields and long open horizons that define much of the province. The design celebrates Canadian geography and rural infrastructure through the most practical symbol the landscape offers.

Designed for the Turn of the Morning

A mug is held in the hand and turned slowly while the morning settles in, so the sign wraps around the curve of the cup and is read a little at a time, the way a driver glances at a marker from the corner of the eye. The green border follows the rim and the numerals sit where the handle meets the body, so the route number stays in view with every sip. It is a fitting companion for anyone who has ever followed one of these roads home.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/saskatchewan-route-696-canada-road-sign-color-changing-mug-11oz-GMY-MUG-SSKRT-11OZ-98-front.webp?v=1793866055
