The flatcar runs across the frame, and the cylindrical mortar sits at its centre with the men standing close beside it. Round cannonballs are stacked on the deck, and a wooden boxcar waits on the rails behind them. Dark green-brown tones of a pine forest fill the background, giving the scene a sense of a rail line cut through the woods.

Meaning & Symbolism

During the American Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, both armies moved troops, supplies and artillery along railways to reach distant positions faster than horses could travel. The picture shows that shift in warfare, where heavy guns were carried on rail cars and the crews who handled them rode alongside. The staging of the scene reflects the long exposures that early photography needed, and the photograph preserves the logistics of the period.

Set on the Mixing Glass

A mixing glass is a tall, clear vessel that is lifted and tilted as it is poured, so the scene is viewed at arm's length and seen as it moves. The glass narrows toward its base, which stacks the flatcar, mortar and boxcar into one vertical band that climbs from the foot of the glass to the rim.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/soldiers-with-cannon-on-small-railroad-car-us-civil-war-pint-glass-16oz-16oz-position1.webp?v=1758618044
https://gomugyourself.com/products/soldiers-with-cannon-on-small-railroad-car-u-s-civil-war-pint-glass-16oz
