A rectangular flag runs through the scene, and the hammer and sickle and a five-pointed star sit among the bold, flat colour blocks. The words INTERKOSMOS, SPACE and FACTS appear as printed text, so the image reads like a vintage mission poster or an archival page. The two suited figures are placed as the focal point, with the emblems framing them.

Meaning & Symbolism

Soyuz 28 launched in March 1978 with Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei Gubarev and Czechoslovak cosmonaut Vladimír Remek, and it docked with the Salyut 6 station. Remek became the first person from outside the United States and the Soviet Union to fly in space. The INTERKOSMOS programme made that flight possible, and the design's emblems and text speak to that moment of international cooperation. The 1970s styling, with its saturated primaries and flat graphic confidence, captures the optimism of the era.

Designed for the Mug in Your Hands

A mug is turned in the hand as you drink, so the composition is seen in pieces rather than all at once. The flag, the figures and the lettering come round in sequence, which suits a design built from distinct emblems. The artwork also appears gradually as the cup warms, so the mission scene develops as your coffee or tea heats, a fitting reveal for a story about a historic first.
