Blue follows at roughly 30 percent, with tan, red and a small amount of black making up the rest. The two cosmonauts, one in a Sokol spacesuit, sit against a space capsule hatch, and the printed text gives the piece its archival tone: "CCCP," "DDR," "INTERKOSMOS" and "SPACE FACTS" run through the layout like the labels on a vintage mission poster.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Soyuz programme was the Soviet Union's workhorse for crewed flight, and Soyuz 31 flew in August 1978 with East German cosmonaut Sigmund Jähn, one of the first international crews under the Interkosmos cooperation scheme. The "DDR" and "INTERKOSMOS" lettering points to that alliance of Eastern Bloc nations sharing the space race, while the hatch and spacesuit stand for the hardware and human effort behind each launch. The whole piece reads as a snapshot of a Cold War moment when orbit was a shared project.

Turning the Story in Your Hand

A mug is held and turned, so the image wraps around a surface you see one slice at a time, from the handle side to the front. The photograph is hidden while the mug is cold and comes forward when a hot drink goes in, so the mission only fully appears once the mug is in use. Pour in something warm and the cosmonauts step out of the faded background, which suits a piece of space history that rewards a closer look.
