Two cosmonauts in Sokol suits occupy the centre, and the open hatch of a space capsule frames them. The lettering reads CCCP, DDR, INTERKOSMOS and SPACE FACTS. Those words set the flight within its Soviet-led, cross-national context.

Meaning & Symbolism

Soyuz 31 launched on 26 August 1978 and carried Soviet commander Valery Bykovsky and East German cosmonaut Sigmund Jähn to the Salyut 6 space station. Jähn became the first German in space, and the DDR lettering marks the German Democratic Republic as the nation he represented. CCCP and INTERKOSMOS name the Soviet Union and the programme that brought allied crews into orbit. The design is a record of that cooperation, shaped by the Cold War era in which it took place.

Holding the Hatch on a Pint

A pint glass is a tall, curved surface, so the capsule hatch and the two suited figures wrap around the vessel as it is lifted and turned. The frosted finish keeps the pale ground soft and holds the lettering in a clear, even tone across the curve.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/soyuz-31-soyuz-space-programme-frosted-pint-glass-16oz-default-title-position1.webp?v=1760830118
