A rectangular layout places the astronauts, the space station and the Earth in a clear sequence. The lettering reads COSMOS, CCCP and SPACE FACTS, which frames the image as a record of a Soviet-led mission. The style is a photographic image with a 1970s colour treatment.

Meaning & Symbolism

Soyuz 38 launched on 18 September 1980 with Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Romanenko and Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez. The spacecraft docked with the Salyut 6 station, where the crew spent about a week on medical, biological, materials and Earth observation work. Tamayo Méndez became the first Cuban in space and the first person of African descent to fly, a milestone the mission carries in its history. The Intercosmos programme that made the flight possible brought allied nations into Soviet missions, and the design stands for that alliance.

Holding the Station on a Pint

A pint glass is a tall, curved surface, so the astronauts, the station and the Earth wrap around the vessel and come into view as the glass turns in the hand. The frosted finish keeps the white ground soft and holds the blue field and lettering in an even tone across the curve.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0703/5204/4312/files/soyuz-38-soyuz-space-programme-frosted-pint-glass-16oz-default-title-position1.webp?v=1760830133
