The flags are the strongest graphic presence: the Union Jack and the Soviet Union flag sit alongside the figures, and the text CCCP and SPACE appears within the frame, with the word FACTS adding a more informational note. The cosmonauts' orange-and-white suits draw the eye to the centre, and the scene reads as a documentary still rather than an illustration.

Meaning & Symbolism

Soyuz TM-12 launched in May 1991 to the Mir space station, and its crew included cosmonauts Anatoly Artsebarsky, Sergei Krikalev and British astronaut Helen Sharman, the first Briton in space. The pairing of the Union Jack and the Soviet flag marks that partnership, which unfolded at the close of the Cold War. The design honours a moment when two nations shared a spacecraft, and the scientific mood of the photograph makes that cooperation the subject.

Built for the Turn of the Wrist

A mug is held and turned, so the scene is seen in pieces: a flag edge at one moment, a suited figure at the next. On this mug the image is faint while the cup is cold and comes forward once a hot drink goes in, so the crew emerges as the coffee warms. It is a small reveal that suits a piece of space history, rewarding anyone who lifts the mug for a morning cup.
