Deep blue fills most of the field, with lighter sky blue behind it, so the scene reads as orbit against open space. Green, red and yellow appear in smaller amounts as accents. The Soyuz spacecraft and the Mir station sit within the badge, with four-pointed stars scattered across the background. Lettering runs around and through the composition: СОЮЗ-ТМ-17, ОК-МИР, ЭО-14 and the year 1993, along with the names of the three crew members, Tsibliyev, Serebrov and Haigneré.

Meaning & Symbolism

Mission patches like this one were the visual shorthand of Soviet spaceflight. Each crew carried its own emblem, and the badge named the mission, the expedition and the people who flew it. The Mir station, a long-running orbital laboratory, stands for the years when Soviet and international crews kept a permanent presence in orbit. The stars and circular frame place the mission within the broader story of cosmonautics, a programme that set many of the early records in human spaceflight.

Made for the Hand and the Morning Ritual

A mug is turned slowly in the hand, so the badge is seen in full each time it is lifted, one side at a time. The circular emblem suits a cup's round body, and the mission details are placed where they are read during a quiet moment. Pour in something hot and the artwork comes forward, so the mission badge only fully appears as the drink warms the surface, a small reveal that fits the spirit of a mission patch unveiled once the crew is in orbit.
