Black and white provide the structure, with yellow and red used sparingly as accents. The Mir station sits at the heart of the composition, with Space Shuttle Atlantis docked alongside it and a globe of Earth below. A United States flag and a Russian flag appear together, and four-pointed stars scatter across the background. Cyrillic lettering runs around the design, including МИР, the crew surnames ДЕЖУРОВ and СТРЕКАЛОВ, and the numeral 18.

Meaning & Symbolism

The patch commemorates a launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on 14 March 1995, carrying Vladimir Dezhurov, Gennadi Strekalov and Ulf Merbold, the first German astronaut to visit Mir. The pairing of the Russian and American flags with the Shuttle and station marks the Shuttle-Mir era, when the two nations worked together in orbit. Mission patches like this one were designed by crews to record a specific flight, and this one holds that spirit of cross-border collaboration. The docking, maintenance and long-duration experiments it represents were the groundwork for the International Space Station that followed.

Built for the Turn of the Wrist

A mug is a thing you turn in your hands, so the patch gets seen from every angle as you lift and rotate it. The image is hidden when the mug is cold and only comes forward as a hot drink warms it, so the mission patch is revealed slowly, one sip at a time. It makes a fine gift for anyone who has ever stayed up watching launches.
